Healthy Thai Food in Bangkok

Thailand is a culinary paradise and Thai food is famous for being salty, spicy, sweet, and sour. Laden with sauces, oils, carbs, sugars, and meats, we love to indulge in a family-style Thai feast.

But what if we have special diet needs or just want to eat healthy on vacation? Along with staying active through local fitness activities, we can find lighter, healthier Thai food in Bangkok within a stone’s throw from your hotel, Public House Sukhumvit 31.

Street Fruit Vendors

Thailand’s tropical fruit game is on point! While we adore sweet sticky rice and coconut cream, sometimes we just need to hit that dessert craving at the local fruit cart instead. You can grab cut-to-order fresh exotic fruits like mango, papaya, pineapple, guava, and durian (if you are brave) for around 40 baht per bag. A healthier alternative and a refreshing way to satisfy a craving.

Grab a fresh coconut from one of the street vendors – young green coconut water is the perfect way to stay hydrated and enjoy tropical flavors while getting your electrolytes in for only about 50 calories!

Bangkok Famous Street Food

Exploring street markets and stalls for authentic Thai dishes is a risky endeavor if you are counting calories. But there are ways to navigate the wonderful world of Thai street food if you are careful.

Green papaya salad - or Som Tum in Thai - is often made fresh right in front of you. At some point, the seller will reach for brown palm sugar, this is when you can tell them "mai sai namtan" - don’t add sugar. Don’t forget a polite thank you - “khob khun kaa/krap!”

Our keto friends will love Gai Yang - grilled chicken legs. You can find them at stalls along Sukhumvit Soi 31 and all over the city. They’re marinated in herbs and spices and grilled over coals to smoky savory perfection. Skip the sticky rice and a sugary dipping sauce, the chicken is tasty enough!

Enjoy Fresh Seafood

As the saying goes, when in Rome, eat shrimp! Or something like that.

Celebrate by taking advantage of the incredible Thailand seafood on offer. whole grilled fish, steamed prawns, crab, lobster, and scallops. Yes please! Not just delicious but also a healthier choice. Opt for grilled or steamed seafood and simply skip the sauces in favor of fresh squeezed lime to keep your meal light.

Vegetarian and Vegan Thai Restaurants

300 meters from Public House are our friends at Pranaa Food for Life. They have delicious Thai vegan food as well as international dishes. Everything is nutrient-dense and packed with veggies.

Near Phrom Phong BTS - and just a 15-minute walk from your hotel - is a Bangkok staple for plant-based friends and allies. Eat.co serves high-quality, homemade, nutritious plant-based food with lots of gluten-free options and substitutions available. Check their menu online here.

There are too many for us to list, but ask the Public House staff for more personal recommendations to meet your dietary needs. Foodies Bangkok rejoice! Whatever your body requires, we got you.
